Ryūji Kiyosu (清洲リュウジ) is a recurring character in Shinkalion. He first appears in Episode 13 of Season 1 and Episode 11 of Season 2. He is voiced by Ryota Osaka and by Ami Naitō as a young child.

Personal[]

Ryūji was the driver of Shinkalion N700A Nozomi and later Shinkalion Doctor Yellow. As part of his own family of five, he is three years older than his brother Tatsumi and six years older than his sister Miyu. A 14-year-old teenager from Nagoya who willingly signs up with Shinkansen Ultra Evolution Institute Nagoya Branch to be a fully trained Shinkalion driver, he is by far, effectively the eldest of all under-aged Drivers to be recruited into the institute.

Ryūji is the son of Chikuma Kiyosu, who like Hokuto Hayasugi, is also a core developer of the Shinkalions, making Ryūji of similar background as Hayato. But unlike Hayato, Ryūji was a highly disciplined karate martial artist who had the potential to champion competitions, but dropped out of continuing the art to tend his family due to the death of his father, and hospitalized ill mother. In order to aid his late father's passion for the Shinkalions, he voluntarily signs up to be trained as a professional driver.

Appearance[]

Ryūji Kiyosu is a fourteen-year-old boy. He wears a long sleeve shirt and long pants.

Personality[]

When he was young, Ryūji was no different than ordinary kids, but after his father died he fell silent, before taking up karate to cope. A few words from his mother also inspired him to be more responsible, which took effect when he began caring for his siblings after she fell ill. This carried over and had a profound effect on his older self; As a teenager, Ryūji is far more mature than the other Shinkalion drivers, having an air of discipline that generally makes him more likely to take charge in battle. He is also very pragmatic; although he respects Hayato's high compatible rate, he regularly restrains the E5's driver to fighting on the sidelines due to his initially poor combat prowess. As a result, the other drivers saw him as inflexible and rigid.

Although he seems to be aloof, Ryūji holds a high level of familial loyalty, and deeply cares for his mother and siblings. Despite this, he doesn't hesitate to reprimand Tatsumi whenever he acts impulsive or gets distracted. Over time, though, the other drivers' influence, in addition to words from his family, have softened his cold demeanor. Although initially reluctant, he later began training Hayato in karate willingly and even joined in some of the group's activities. As a result, he became much more respective to the other drivers, and even began researching railways in the hopes of becoming a director.

While Ryūji does his best to give an excellent performance in all of his endeavors, he tends to struggle in situations he is vastly unfamiliar with; he quickly lost his cool over a bonding attempt during a meal due to the other participants' eating customs being vastly different from that of his family's, and he was in utter disbelief after only scoring 2 points out of the 100 on Hayato's railway test, which worsened after he continually failed to answer questions in Futaba's railway tour quiz later on, though he eventually recovered from the setback.

By the second season, Ryūji was far more composed and flexible due to his time spent fighting for the SUEI, despite having his compatible rate drop due to age. Additionally, his experiences with Hayato also made him quick in attempting to resolve conflicts, even employing similar tactics at times.

While Ryuji trained to return to the field during the start of the Teoti conflict, his compatibility dropped with age, rendering him unable to continue as a driver. Following this, having taken up a job as a karate instructor, he began training the Anjo siblings as driver candidates while taking up a more executive position at the SUEI.
